How to Use this Guide

Use the tabs at the top to get to specific resources.  There are links to catalogs, databases, videos, and handouts from our library and others.  Technology Tips are designed to make the process easier and more organized, and also to help you reach technology literacy, using free tools on the web.  Please keep in mind that this guide does not replace a close working relationship with your instructor and your librarian.  Please do not spend more than 15 minutes of frustration before you contact your librarian.

The Assignment

 Instructions for Research Paper Outline

As discussed in class, your research paper outline should cover some of the Pro’s & Con’s of your issue as well as some of your references.  The general format is as follows:

1. Title: be sure to pose this in the form of a question, or proposal which is a possible solution to an environmental problem.  For example: “Should dams on the Columbia River be removed in order to restore salmon runs?”

2. “Pro” arguments: at least 3 declarative statements in favor of the proposal.  For example: “Removing dams on the Columbia will increase the downstream flow, improving conditions for salmon fry”.

3. “Con” arguments: at least 3 declarative statements opposing the proposal.  For example: “Dams on the Columbia river are crucial for providing a source of cheap, hydroelectric power”.

4. References:  this section should list at least 3 references that you have utilized so far in your research.  These citations need to be in the proper APA format as shown in your “Citing Sources Using APA Style” handout in your packet.

The outline should be typed or printed neatly.  It needs to be no more than one half to a full page.  I will grade and return your outlines to give you feedback on your topic.  View this outline as your first outline draft.  Your final paper should have more and refined arguments as well as more references, of course.
