This term refers to the part of the world that is generally less affluent and less industrialized (what Barnett calls the "Gap"), in contrast to the “Global North” (Barnett's "Core"), which refers to the wealthy, industrialized nations of North America, Europe and parts of East Asia (mostly Japan). Other terms for the Global South include “underdeveloped nations,” “less developed nations,” and “Third World,” all of which have their problems as terms.
