"The [columnar] fastigiate variety pictured here is probably the most commonly planted variety of English oak. English oak is a predominant tree in England, and was heavily used in the construction of stout English ships during the colonial period." [1]

Couples were still wed under ancient oaks as late as Oliver Cromwell's time and the Yule log, kept from one year to another to warm the Christmas celebrations, was traditionally cut from oak." [2]
